Denise and Adam, Kenwood Hall [Married]

Denise and Adam.. Wow, what a super couple celebrating their marriage at an equally super venue! Kenwood Hall is a beautiful venue , just one mile from Sheffield city centre it combines a city location with an idyllic country setting!

The weather forecast wasn’t great, heavy showers were predicted but finger and toe crossing did the trick and the rain didn’t fall! I joined Adam and his ushers at a local pub for pre wedding drinks before making my way to the Hall where Denise was getting ready. Here are a selection of my favourite photos from the day:-

Updated Business Cards…

I was looking for some high quality business cards a few years ago and tried several websites, several companies offered cheap cards and high quality printing but no printers offered to ability to do anything exciting… then I came across a website called www.moo.com

Moo is a brilliant website which offers the highest of quality printing with one major feature.. ‘Printfinity’ is MOO’s option of printing a different image on every card in the pack and it’s a truly brilliant feature!

I recently logged back onto Moo and updated my collection of business cards with images from some of my recent weddings/engagement shoots, here are some samples of the finished cards:-

Laura and Richard [Engaged] Salford Quays, Manchester

I spent a fun day with Laura and Richard in Manchester yesterday. I have known Laura for quite a few years and was very honoured when she approached me and asked me to cover her upcoming wedding in the beautiful Lake District!

Here are some of my favourite photos from our engagement shoot at the Salford Quays in Manchester. My partner Jess came along with me and was incredibly excited when we came across the Blue Peter Garden at the new BBC studios in Salford Quays!

I took a range of different photos around the quayside with the newly built BBC studios on one side and the Imperial War Museum on the other side of the quays. The following two images are my favourite images from the shoot:-

Michelle and Paul [Engaged] York

The walled city of York located at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and River Foss in North Yorkshire is a truly beautiful city and a perfect location for the engagement shoot of Paul and Michelle. I have been to York once or twice before but I have never had the opportunity to shoot there, I was therefore more than happy to visit the city with Paul and Michelle when Paul suggested shooting there having grown up in the city as a child. We drove towards York in heavy fog but were more than delighted when the fog cleared and a perfectly blue sky was revealed, here are some of my favourites from the shoot:-

Black-and-white-sheffield |

Black and white images can be beautiful, but to master black and white photography one must fully understand the concept of grey scale. (start of educational information… Grey scale is a spectrum of black, lots of grey and white, like the colours of a rainbow but in a series of black and white and grey tones. You see a black and white photo is not really only black and white; it is actually lots of different shades and different depths of grey. So when one talks about grey scale it just means the way we measure tones of grey… end of educational information)

When you remove colour from an image you can no longer rely on it to provide interest or a focal point in a scene. This may seem obvious but it can be easy to forget. By doing away with colour we also remove one of the most potentially distracting elements in a photo which can of course work in your favour.

Press shots – Danny & Rich of Hiddenagenda…

This afternoon I had the privilege of photographing Danny and Rich who together form Hiddenagenda – a Sheffield based trance duo who regularly play at various venues around the UK and Ibiza. I photographed the pair about three years ago so it was really nice to be asked to take some further press shots for them.

The weather was somewhat erratic in typical British weather style, we arrived at our first location on the very top floor of the Q park (otherwise locally known as the cheese grater) just in time for the beautiful winter blue sky to be covered in a very glum looking covering of black clouds.. this was of course immediately followed by a torrential rain shower! … Fortunately the rain cloud disappeared as quickly as it appeared and the blue sky returned several minutes later.

Sheffield in winter

I haven’t blogged for a while…in fact…I haven’t photographed much for a while…
It felt great to pick up my camera, screw on my 50mm prime and throw my camera strap over my shoulder this morning. It may well be November i.e. the middle of the wedding photography ‘low season’ but it was sunny out and photography is my passion… I must shoot more regularly.. must!

Manchester on a sunny day | Manchester

Manchester has some truly beautiful buildings and public spaces, I have enclosed a few photos from a recent trip to the city to see a friend. The photos are not wedding related, nor are they technically architectural photos * the weather however was glorious, the blue sky was to die for.. I couldn’t help but snap away and take some photos in the amazingly unusual 26c heat!

*A message for any architectural photographers – You will instantly notice that a tilt shift lens was not used here, I could have used lens correction in Photoshop to solve this issue but in this instance I have left the photos as they were shot..17mm wide on a full frame.

Tramlines Festival | Sheffield | July 2011

Tramlines sprung into life just three years ago and yet the music festival which takes over the very heart of the city of Sheffield has become one of the city’s most popular events. The free for all, two day music festival was this year spread across 5 main stages with dozens of additional smaller venues, one off parties and outside events. A continental market with over 25stalls selling fresh produce and food from around the world was also arranged to coincide with the festival which quite literally takes over the centre of the city.

Over 125thousand people visited the festival in 2010, no official figures for 2011 have been released as yet but the festival is drastically increasing in popularity on a year by year basis, the figures could be 150thousand, perhaps more! Here are a selection of photos from the final day of the festival..

Vicky & Chris…

Vicky and Chris are getting married at the beautiful Midland Hotel in Manchester in two weeks time. Today I had the privilege of meeting up with them in Manchester for a few drinks, we talked over all the plans for their big day and had a quick look around the hotel, the Grade II listed treasure oozes luxury, comfort and style, I simply can’t wait to cover their day!

It rained on and off all day in today, typical July weather! Thankfully we managed to dodge the rain showers and snatched some quick portraits down on the canal in central Manchester. Here are a few samples…

Naomi & Chris -Western Park Museum & The Millennium Gallery

Naomi & Chris were married at two beautiful venues last weekend… The ceremony was held at the Western Park Museum, a beautiful building originally built in 1887 and the reception was held at The Millennium Gallery (Venue decor by the brilliant ‘Hansley Beard Event Planning & Design’) Here are a selection of photos which tell the story from the very start of the day…

Naomi got ready at her parents’ house and then made her way to the Western Park Museum with her bridesmaids and immediate family in two of the most amazing vintage cars! The guests were transported from the Museum to the reception venue on a vintage Red route master bus!

Naomi and Chris had entrusted the brilliant Jennie from ‘Hansley Beard Event Planning & Design’ for the venue decor at the Millennium Galleries and what a great job she did! I had never met Jennie before this wedding but I had seen the great selection of work on her blog..very impressive stuff! I would certainly recommend a visit if you’re about to start the process of planning your big day!

Wedding Videos…

Up until a few years ago there was a large gap between the wedding photographer and the wedding videographer, the two separate trades required very different skills and very different equipment. All this changed however when Canon released the Canon 5D mk2 camera and threw a huge spanner in the works!

The 5D mk2 has the ability to shoot in 1080p HD and was the first Digital SLR on the market to do such a thing, many photographers and videographer alike initially classed this feature as a mere gimmick.. an advanced feature rarely to be touched. This however all changed following the release of a short film by Canon which was entirely filmed on the camera, the quality of the film shuck the film industry by the scruff of its neck and many in the industry have never looked back. In short the camera has the ability to produce very high quality footage at a fraction of the price and physical size of many of film industry standard cameras.

I have had my Canon 5D mk2 for several months now, I recently picked up the camera and began filming for the very first time. This short (very short) film was filmed towards the very end a recent wedding, my video skills are somewhat limited but it’s amazing what you can produce in the first 15minutes of use.
